Chris B (kr) wrote: With the sequel currently in cinemas it was the perfect time to watch the original for the first time. I enjoyed the acting, plot and direction but I personally struggle with people being selfish at the expense of a child, with one scene encapsulating this brilliantly. I also thought there wasn't enough time spent on one character's fall into drug addiction and it just felt like a background plot point that should have had a more profound effect on the characters. What I don't fully understand is the film's cult appeal as a seminal film. It might be that it encapsulates a time period quite well but having been 8 at the time I wasn't fully aware of what this time was like. All in all I enjoyed the film but thought it could have been slightly longer to explore some of the more weighty elements of the film.

This, to me, is the most scripturalpresentation so far. The acting was superb considering the actors hadto contend with a dialogue that was taken straight out of the Bible. The actor who portrayed Jesus (Cusick) gave a very refreshing portrayalof Jesus, the man. I especially liked it when he smiled! I remember Maxvon Sydow's and Robert Powell's portrayal of Jesus and they were too'somber'.It seemed like I was reading the Gospel of John while watching thefilm.
Though the movie was quite long (the gospel account has 21chapters!),I was never bored. Reviewed by jimmyboy13 I saw this movie last weekend.
The weekend before I saw 'Passion of theChrist'. The 'Gospel of John' is truly a line-by-line presentation of theGospel of John, and I thought the actors did an excellent job.
The moviewas top-quality in all aspects, which was a pleasant surprise. Too manypast Christian-produced films have been pretty low on the qualitystandard.Anyway, the best part of this movie is that the spoken dialogue and thenarration is actually what's written in the English translation of theBible, and that is the most important thing here. God says that it's 'hisword that goes out and does the work it was sent to do', and that 'faithcomes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' People don't need tohear opinions, variations, or whatever. The world's full of that stuff, andyes there's a place for it. However, what will be most effective intouching people's hearts is for them to read/hear the word of God, andthatis the main reason why this film is most excellent.Everyone should see this film. Reviewed by cubes007 10/10 This film was surprisingly very good.

Unlike Mel Gibson's 'The Passion ofChrist' this movie can serve both Christians and non-Christians as acohesive educational experience. But this isn't a boring, conservativeChristian movie. All really good dramas are character-driven and thepotrayal/interpretation of Jesus in this movie is so strong that if I werethe crying type I very well might have. Jesus is very genuine, compassionate, emotional, yet self-controlled.
At first I wasn't quitesoldby Henry Ian Cusick's style, but his sincerity was really consistentthroughout the movie and I was convinced about 20 minutes into the movieatmost. Other users have commented on how they were surprised by Jesus'simpatience with the discples or loud tone when speaking to the PhariseesbutI have to say, if you've read the Gospels then you should expect Jesus tobedemonstrative and uninhibited, as circumstances dictate. As others have said, this movie is a faithful adaptation of the gospel ofJohn. I thought that having every single word of the book either spoken bycharacters or narrated was a necessary and intelligent decision to make.Tohear the Word allows you to consider the actors & director'sinterpretationof certain events & verses, and also to simply consider the Word foryourself in a comprehensive manner. After all, how often does one everreadstraight through the book of John?Watching this movie really helps the Christian understand Jesus'incredibly difficult situation. I'm not talking about thecrucifiction, but the fact that Jesus as the Son of God is incarnated into a man and hasto tell men who he really is. To put it more clearly, imagine if Godincarnate stood before you as an average looking human being and said 'Iamthe Son of God.' Unless you saw a miracle it you would not be willing tosuspend disbelief.
I empathized with Jesus when he emphatically said, 'Iamtelling you the truth!' So many times throughout the movie. In conclusion, this movie is really worth your time to watch. Althoughitis very long and you may lose focus at times during themiddle portion I would still highly recommend it. It isn't perfect butoverall it's a fantastic piece of work. This work appeals immensely to all the believers and works out fine to convert all the newcomers. To the non-believers, this work will seem dull and boring, but then, let's be straight - this is the most accurate, the most precise and elegant retelling of the Gospel According to Luke.
Since I am a Protestant Christian myself, I must say that this film really did help me to understand who Jesus is and what He was doing among us the people on Earth. The play of Mr. Deacon is very good, he does an extremely difficult work and he does it well.
I remember my eyes were wet with tears during the Crucifix scene, and then my heart leaped violently with joy during the final scenes. The film is very well done, by seeing the sandy dusty plains and hills of Israel, you feel the smell of age, you do believe in the truth of the plot and you do follow the film scene by scene. A very serious and thoughtful work. Reviewed by Beyfenn 7 A somewhat expurgated version of the gospel of Luke, Brian deacons version of Jesus is appealing, if somewhat un-animated. I have a great love for this film ( mainly due to the fact that it was the first film about Jesus I can remember seeing from my childhood.) Not as epic as Zeffirelli's film, nor as graphic as Gibson's, a faithful representation with only a few omissions ( I'm sure either due to budget or time constraints). The acting is at times somewhat melodramatic, but that is part of the charm of this film.
The cinematography is not ground breaking but certainly serves its purpose and doesn't overshadow the story, and really thats one of the best things about this film, nothing in it overshadows the story as a whole. Reviewed by johnjhafs 10 This was, I thought, the best cinematic summary of the life of Christ I have yet seen. Brian Deacon, who portrays Jesus, looks the part and speaks with quiet authority. His interaction with children in the movie gives a moving picture of the tenderness of Christ. The words of Christ are given in modern translation making it easy for the viewer to understand the language.

Simon Peter (Niko Nitai) looks the part and acts it well. The movie allows about the same amount for the last week of Christ's life as does the gospel (about 25%). While not a perfect movie (nothing on earth is perfect), this is a delightful one. If you are looking for an accurate picture of Christ which accords well with the Bible, this is it!
